The Old Fashioned: the perfect drink for whiskey lovers everywhere. It's a time-tested classic, so much so that it was named after the "old fashioned" way of making cocktails back in the 1800s before the Golden Era of cocktails was a thing.
The ingredients for an Old Fashioned are what people needed back in the day to make straight whiskey more palatable, which was important for doctors trying to make their patients drink it.
Side note, can we please go back to prescribing whiskey as a remedy for the common cold??
Anyways, here's what you'll need for a good ol' strong one:
- 2 oz bourbon
- 1 tsp water
- 1 sugar cube
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Orange slice for garnish
- Maraschino cherries for garnish
To create it:
- Add Angostura bitters to a mixing glass
- Add water
- Muddle sugar cube into water
- Add bourbon
- Add ice for mixing
- Stir until chilled
- Strain and serve on the rocks
- Garnish with orange slice, maraschino cherries
The extra good news about this recipe is that there are a ton of variations. Don't want to muddle a sugar cube? Throw in a 1/2 oz simple syrup instead. Want more sweetness? Try demerara sugar. Want to add a different flavor? Muddle in some fruit or mix in a bit of your favorite liqueur.
Cheers!
